Panther Valley rolls past Marian

Rivalries can be exciting and, at times, intimidating.

The Panther Valley volleyball team embraced the moment Monday night, rolling past rival Marian in straight sets, 3-0, on its home court.

Even Panther Valley coach Nancy Filer didn’t expect such a dominant performance.

Asked if she saw it coming, Filer responded with an emphatic, “NO!”

Her players understood the significance of the moment.

“This is a big rivalry game, so you have to play with energy,” standout senior outside hitter JaeLynn Browdy said after the Panthers posted set victories of 25-13, 25-18 and 25-20 against a strong Fillies squad.

Marian coach Marie Currie sensed trouble early as Panther Valley effectively neutralized Marian’s top threats.

“We never got into a flow, they came out and did a good job,” Currie said.

The Fillies opened the match with a quick 3-0 lead, but the advantage was short-lived. Panther Valley took control and surged to a 19-11 advantage behind strong serving and steady play.

“It was all about our (level) energy,” sophomore Kathryn Breslin said. “We had a lot energy to work off and it paid off.”

Filer had a feeling her team was ready.

“They wanted to practice Saturday, and I could tell they were going to have a great game.”

Panther Valley was especially effective at the net, led by sophomore middle blocker Sophia Paton.

“Our goal was to defend (against) Addy Marek, she is such a good player,” Paton said.

Paton finished with five blocks, nine service points and four aces. She received plenty of support from Browdy and Breslin. Browdy recorded eight kills, 18 assists and seven digs, while Breslin contributed 12 aces and seven kills.

For Marian, Kali Grochowski finished with 14 digs, three aces and three kills. Marek added five kills and five digs. Maddy Davis recorded 10 kills and eight digs, JoElle Currie had 17 assists, and Cara Renhart added 12 digs.

“We just never had a good flow, no matter what we tried to do,” Currie said.

Marian’s strongest push came in the third set. The Fillies rallied from a 20-15 deficit to pull within a point at 20-19 and appeared poised to extend the match.

Panther Valley responded, however, getting a key kill before Danika Blazosky delivered three consecutive aces to help close out the victory.

“The way we ended it was a good sign for us,” Filer said.

Filer knows tougher challenges await in Schuylkill League Division 1. The Panthers travel to Lourdes today, then face North Schuylkill before closing their regular season next week against Pine Grove and undefeated Division 1 leader Pottsville.

Marian now must regroup. The Fillies will look to hand unbeaten Tri-Valley (10-0) its first loss, and force a tie for first place in Division 2 before the opening round of the Schuylkill League playoffs on Oct. 19.

WHERE THEY STAND ... Marian (10-4) leads the District 11 Class A standings, while Panther Valley is second in District 11 Class 4A behind Bethlehem Catholic.

STAYING THE COURSE ... Panther Valley remained in control throughout the match. In the second set, the teams battled back and forth before the Panthers used a 9-0 run to turn a 15-14 lead into a 24-14 advantage on their way to a 25-18 victory.
