Eagles soar over Panther Valley
ORWIGSBURG — Friday night at Blue Mountain, David went against Goliath in football. But David didn’t have a proverbial slingshot, and the result wasn’t very pretty.
David, in this case, was Panther Valley, a team struggling a little bit with an inexperienced backfield and shallow depth. Blue Mountain is the Goliath who appears to be the king of the Schuylkill League.
The Eagles, after catapulting to a 42-0 first quarter lead, stayed in the driver’s seat the entire game and glided to a 60-0 victory.
Blue Mountain, 4-0 in league action and 5-1 overall, scored every time they had the ball in the first quarter. The Eagles forced two PV fumbles — both giving them great field position — and didn’t yield any first downs in those first 12 minutes.
The Panthers, 1-2 against league opponents and 3-3 overall, produced just one serious threat in the entire contest.
It happened in the second quarter, thanks to a 27-yard pass play from junior quarterback Cy Maynard to classmate Jason Ahn. That play gave PV a first down at the Blue Mountain 25. Two plays later, Maynard completed a screen pass to sophomore Carson Jones. Jones, a muscular, 200-pound package, bulled around his right side and made it to the 15 and a first down. The Eagles defense held, though, shutting PV down and taking the ball on downs.
In the first quarter, Blue Mountain intertwined its running and passing game and found that to be very productive. After that, the Eagles resorted to strictly a ground game.
Just as the score indicates, so did the statistics in proving the ease of the victory for the Eagles. Blue Mountain had 179 rushing yards and 163 passing yards. PV, on the other hand, had 22 positive rushing yards, but that was offset by minus-20 yards. Passing, PV accumulated 51 yards, 41 of them on that Ahn completion.
The night began with the Eagles taking the opening kickoff on their 35 as a result of the ball being kicked out of bounds. The PV defense managed to slow the Blue Machine down a little bit, allowing the Eagles to get to the PV 46 on four plays. Then, the Eagles quarterback threw a perfect pass to the open Kole Luckenbill, who cradled the ball in his arms and took it to the end zone. A kick by Blake Batory made the score 7-0.
PV turned the ball over on downs on its own 28, and the Eagles took advantage. On the third play from scrimmage, sophomore Sonny Amato ran through the right side of the defense and plowed into the end zone. The kick made it 14-0.
On PV’s first play from scrimmage, the Eagles recovered a fumble on the Panthers 17. On the next play, Brody Foose sprung through a left-side opening and into the end zone. The kick afterward was good, so the score was 21-0 with 6:53 remaining.
It was four-and-out for PV, so the Eagles took a punt on their 49. Four plays later, Frank Russo burst into the end zone from the one.
Another fumble recovery gave the ball to Blue Mountain on the PV 13. On a third-and-eight play, quarterback Cohen Kirby ran around the left side and across the goal line for a TD.
Blue Mountain scored the first time it had the ball in the second quarter, with Amato carrying on a three-yard play with 6:19 in the half.
The Panthers controlled the ball for 10 straight plays before running out of downs at the 21. When they turned the ball over to their opponent, the Eagles had time for just two plays, none of them threatening.
Both teams did heavy substituting the rest of the night.
HALL OF FAME INDUCTION ... Blue Mountain had their annual Sports Hall of Fame induction at halftime.
NEXT WEEK ... Panther Valley returns to their home field next week, hosting Pottsville Friday night. Blue Mountain will be hosting Pine Grove next week.
TWO AWESOME TACKLES ... While PV didn’t have many highlights, there were several excellent defensive plays. One occurred in the second quarter when Blue Mountain was driving inside the 10. Senior Jerry Harrison, 6-2 and 300 pounds, who has been tough in every game, broke through the line for a sack. Then in the second quarter, Brody Foose caught a pass and carried it to the PV five in a play that covered 56 yards. It looked like Foose had a sure touchdown, but 145-pound sophomore Corrigan Crampsie chased him down, grabbed his shoulders from behind, spun him around and threw him to the ground. But the Eagles scored two plays later.
