Annual Pink Light Walk in Lehighton set for Tuesday

The Lehighton Area Lioness Lions Club will host its 21st annual Pink Light Walk on Tuesday.

It begins at 6 p.m. at the Lehighton Boys and Girls Band Hall, 197 N. Sixth St., Lehighton. The band hall opens at 4 p.m. for the basket raffle.

There will be vendors and support groups on-site, along with the Pink Heals Ambulance, which asks survivors to autograph the ambulance, according to Brenda Green, vice president, Lehighton Area Lioness Lions Club.

“Everyone is encouraged to participate to bring awareness to the fight for the cure of breast cancer,” Green said. “Our sponsors and basket raffle allow us to donate all proceeds to this fight.”

Green said this year’s walk with give 75% of the proceeds to the PA Breast Cancer Coalition, with the remaining 25% to Heart Wings, a foundation in Lehighton that assists breast cancer patients with items not covered by their insurance. Last year, they were able to donate $7,288, she said.

The walk begins at 6 p.m. and will be held rain or shine. Participants will be escorted by the “Black Beauty” truck to the Lehighton Amphitheater. Bagpipers, led by Beth Ritter-Guth, will greet the walkers at the amphitheater. The event will recognize survivors with a short ceremony.

Green said two health care professionals, Dr. Ali Butash, a general surgeon specializing in surgical oncology, and Metsa Osmanzai, lead mammogram technician at St Lukes Hospital, will speak.

Green said walkers will return to the band hall where light refreshments will be served. Nonwalkers may remain at the band hall to await the return of the walkers. Basket raffle ticket purchasing will conclude when the walk begins at 6 p.m.

Participants are encouraged to preregister at pinklightwalk@gmail.com. Please register as a “Supporter” or a “Survivor.”

So far, Green said they have received walk sponsorships from St Luke’s Health Network/Carbon, Carbon Search & Settlement, Steven’s Heating, Jim Thorpe Neighborhood Bank, 443 Auto Sales, Jim Thorpe River Adventures, Pam Gothard/ReMax RE, Iron Valley RE, Walmart, RA Ahner Furniture & Appliances, Mauch Chunk Trust, Blue Mountain Resort and Woodstone Country Club.

“We are also appreciative to all the local businesses and organizations that have donated items for our basket raffle,” Green said. “Together we can continue the fight for the cure.”
