The indoor swimming pool at the Panther Valley High School, closed since the 1981-82 term, because of prohibitive operating costs, will not reopen for an after-school aquatic program as planned.

Although the school board approved the program, Dr. Andrew Chichura, superintendent of schools, reported this morning the reopening is off indefinitely because the pool is in poor condition.

During a thorough inspection done recently by Sylvan Pools, the installer, a number of problems were discovered, the superintendent said. They include a rapid water loss from the pool due to several factors, including two large cracks in the bottom of the deep end. Dr. Chichura said the marlite waterproofing finish along the sides and floor of the pool is also leaking.
