Usually, the key to slowing down a powerful offense is making it one-dimensional.

Against Blue Mountain, good luck picking which dimension to take away.

The Eagles were equally dangerous on the ground and through the air Friday night, using a balanced offensive attack to overwhelm Tamaqua in a 42-7 victory.

Blue Mountain scored early and often, alternating rushing and passing touchdowns to take a 42-0 lead into halftime.

After a slow offensive start in last week’s matchup with Pottsville, the Eagles wasted no time getting on the scoreboard.

Brody Foose capped a 5-play, 50-yard drive with an 8-yard score on Blue Mountain’s first drive. Blake Batory added the extra point for a 7-0 lead.

“Our captains said, ‘We gotta come out hot this week. After the slow start against Pottsville, we can’t do that anymore,’” said Sonny Amoato. “Good teams are gonna take advantage of that. So we realized we gotta come out hot to start from now on.”

After forcing a three-and-out on Tamaqua’s first offensive series, Cohen Kirby found Kole Luckenbill for a 29-yard catch and run to put the Eagles up 14-0.

Kirby was nearly perfect on the night, finishing 7 of 9 for 176 yards and 3 touchdowns while only playing the first half. He eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark passing for the season in the victory.

“I feel like we did very well passing the ball and running the ball,” said Kirby. “We were pretty even tonight between passing and running. Brody did a great job. Sonny did a great job, and the linemen were awesome creating holes and in pass protection. So, all props to them.”

After the teams traded punts to end the first quarter, Brody Foose darted for a 54-yard score on the first play of the second quarter for his second score of the game.

Despite playing on grass for the first time this season, the Eagles looked right at home on the natural surface. Foose was especially comfortable, finishing his night with 100 yards and two touchdowns on six carries.

“I’m a big grass guy. I like smash-mouth football,” Foose said. “From back in the ’90s, that’s all my dad talks about, and I just feel like I run best on grass.”

The Eagles’ starting defense was just as good as its offense in the first half. Outside of a 45-yard run from Ryder Holmberg for a big gain, Tamaqua finished the first half with 15 rushes for -1 yards.

The Eagles’ front seven controlled the line of scrimmage, with defensive linemen Ryan Clemas, Vaughn Helverson, and Landon Daubert getting immediate penetration and early contact on the Blue Raiders rushers.

After forcing a Blue Raider punt, the Eagles wasted no time adding to their lead.

On the first play of the ensuing possession, Kirby connected with Luckenbill on a deep ball down the sideline for a 58-yard touchdown, extending the lead to 28-0.

After forcing another one of their 5 first-half three-and-outs, Sonny Amato toted the rock for much of the Eagles’ next drive and capped a 7-play, 49-yard drive with a one-yard plunge on 4th and goal, making the score 35-0.

The Eagles added their final score of the first half with just under four minutes to go when Kirby found West Virginia-bound Chase Guers for a 35-yard score. Batory added the extra point, giving Blue Mountain a 42-0 lead heading to halftime.

With the mercy rule in order, a short second half was highlighted by interceptions by both teams early in the third quarter.

Frankie Russo picked off Ace Schickram on Tamaqua’s opening drive of the second half, but Schickram returned the favor two plays later when he intercepted Anthony Amato’s pass.

The Blue Raiders would get points on the board off the turnover, as Holmberg found paydirt from 22 yards out to solidify the final score at 42-7. Holmberg, a sophomore, stepped up for the Blue Raiders, finishing with 7 carries for 70 yards and added a 19 yard reception as well.

Blue Mountain moves to 4-1 while Tamaqua falls to 2-3. The Eagles play host to Panther Valley, while Tamaqua welcomes Pottsville next week as Schuylkill League play continues.
