Construction work on Summit Hill’s Memorial Park, also known as the Old Presbyterian Cemetery, is set to begin on Oct. 5.

Marlene Basiago, who is spearheading the Memorial Park improvement project, told the borough council Thursday night the park is being closed through the duration of the construction period.

The park, located across the street from the Summit Hill Post Office, will have signs installed indicating no trespassing will be permitted.

Basiago said police have been instructed to initially issue warnings to anyone seen inside the park and to cite them for a recurring infraction.

Joseph Weber, president of the council, said, “It will be enforced as best it can.”

“People should be able to read and abide by the rules,” Basiago said.

The work will be done in several phases, with the first part being installation of benches, memorial pavers and solar lights.

Basiago said 134 memorial pavers have been purchased. Although the initial purchasing period has been closed, more pavers will be available for purchase in Spring.

On a related note, Basiago said a basket raffle and bake sale to raise funds for the park project will be held Sept. 27 at the Hilltop Community Center. The drawing is set for 2 p.m.

About three dozen baskets as well as gift certificates have already been donated for the event.

In one other matter during the special meeting of the borough council, it was agreed to purchase a used all-terrain vehicle from Panther Valley School District for $1.

The council said the vehicle doesn’t work, but that Ron Yuricheck, the borough’s work supervisor, feels it can be put into running order for about $500.

Weber said the district would likely have given the borough the ATV, but it is required that it be sold.

He said the transaction likely will be similar to when the borough gave the district a police cruiser it no longer used and charged $1 for it.

In addition, Weber said the borough and school district have a great relationship because of a shared services agreement.
