As Coaldale works on an ordinance regulating the use of electric bikes and scooters, borough council President Rose Hoben asked parents of riders to talk to their child about safety.

“I’m going to put this out to the parents in the community to please inform your children that they must abide by the laws to stop at stop signs, not just ride through them,” she said at last week’s council meeting.

Hoben said she often sees e-bike riders “flying” through a stop sign where she lives.

“If a car does not see them, the child is going to get hit,” she said.

She also encouraged parents to make sure their child is wearing a helmet.

“I don’t want it to happen, I don’t ever want to see a child get hurt, but they need to abide by the rules,” Hoben said.

Mayor Daniel Weiksner said he recently attended the annual Pennsylvania State Mayors’ Association conference, where there were discussions about e-bikes and scooters.

“Every borough is having issues with this,” he said.

Weiksner said he believes the state will need to “step in.”

“But you are right; parents need to step in,” Weiksner said to Hoben. “I wish they would do something at the schools to put out information to the kids that ‘this is what is legal and this is what is illegal.’ ”

He added that he is aware of some places where the electric bikes and scooters are being impounded.

Both Weiksner and Hoben said they don’t want to punish the riders — they just want to make sure they’re riding their bikes in a safe and legal manner.

In keeping with youth matters, Hoben said she’s been trying for months to find a student to serve as a junior council member.

But with no interest, she suggested tabling the matter and revisiting it at a later date.

As for Trick-or-Treat Night, it will be held from 6-8 p.m. Oct. 31.
