Camelback Resort will launch a new Halloween attraction, “The Curse of Camelback,” on Thursday at Camelbeach Mountain Waterpark.

The immersive attraction uses Camelbeach and surrounding mountain terrain as the setting for a fictional story centered on a chemical accident that triggers a dangerous outbreak.

According to the storyline, chemicals used during excavation of new winter trails mixed with pool-cleaning compounds, creating toxic fumes that cause those exposed to mutate. Guests begin the experience at the base of the mountain, where they are recruited to join a fictional emergency response mission.

Visitors then ride the mountain lift to Camelbeach and enter the outbreak’s containment zone. The attraction includes an abandoned emergency response camp, fog-filled waterpark attractions, simulated chemical spills, barricades, tunnels and maze-like pathways populated by costumed characters.

Signs and other details throughout the attraction provide background on the fictional outbreak.

Guests eventually encounter Gary, identified in the storyline as “patient zero,” before making their way through the attraction’s final scenes.

Jason Bays, vice president and general manager of Camelback Resort, said the attraction is intended to become part of an annual Halloween event tradition at the resort.

“The Curse of Camelback” will operate Sept. 17 through Nov. 8. Hours are 6-10 p.m. Thursdays and Sundays and 6 p.m. to midnight Fridays and Saturdays.
