The Weatherly American Legion Family of Post/Unit 360 held a 9/11 25th Anniversary Remembrance event at the Post on Saturday.

An open house with a piece of steel from the North Tower of the World Trade Center as well as newspapers and magazines from across the county from the day after the attacks were on display.

The Legion also had pictures of the 9/11 Museum, the Tower of Voices and Flight 93 Memorial on display with refreshments served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., when the program began.

Following the Pledge of Allegiance and the national anthem sung by Albert Titus, a Memorial Wreath was laid. The Freedom Flag was raised by members of Post 360, the Weatherly Police Department, the Citizens Fire Co. No 1 and the L&L Fire Co.

First responders and Legion family members read the 10 Elements of the Freedom Flag.

Josh Levitsky, a former New York City EMT and local firefighter who was on duty on 9/11, spoke of his experiences that day.

Also attending were Weatherly Mayor Mike Belizzia, Carbon County Commissioner Mike Sofranko and state Rep. Doyle Heffley.

Members of the Weatherly Ministerium, first responders and Legion family members read the poem “In Remembrance,” written by Wilmington, North Carolina, firefighter Lt. Tom Robinson.

Community members, including Weatherly Area School District teachers, rang a bell in memory of all those lost on 9/11 at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

John Simkovich sang the hymn, “Christ in the Rubble” and “God Bless America.” Those attending, numbering about 60, joining in singing.

The program concluded with a gun salute by the Post 360 Honor Guard and the playing of taps by Dan Derfligher, high school band director.
