No girls soccer team in District 11 has played more games than Northwestern Lehigh, and only two others have matched the eight games played that the Tigers have rattled off already.

Neither of those teams have won more than four of those eight games, while Northwestern has won seven of its first eight games.

The seventh win was a 7-0 shutout against Bangor Monday at Tigers Stadium.

“It’s hard not to be happy with a team that has won six straight league games and seven overall,” said coach Jordan Smith. “There are always little things here and there, but none of them are big enough to concern me.

“The biggest thing was getting the new players to mix in with the girls who have been here for a while and get everybody together, and the girls did that really well.”

Northwestern got goals from two of the newcomers in Monday’s win.

Freshman Kaylynn Knauss opened the scoring with a goal, while classmate Elliana Fluke added two goals and two assists.

“I’m really comfortable either going for the goal myself, or getting the ball to someone else to get the shot. When I first started playing soccer it was all about getting the goal, but I’ve learned that it’s just important to get the goal no matter who scores it,” said Fluke.

“I’m really proud of the fact that the older players on the team trust me enough to get the ball to me, and it’s exciting when I can get it to one of them for a goal.”

A pair of seniors, Amelia Glassberg and Sophia Schaffer, both scored twice for Northwestern.

Glassberg capped the first-half scoring when the Tigers were awarded a penalty kick, and she hammered a shot off of the goalie that rebounded back to Glassberg, who put a follow-up shot on goal to make it 5-0 with 2:29 left in the first half.

Maci Mariano took over in goal for Bangor in the second half and made things tougher on Northwestern’s offense.

It wasn’t until just past the midway point in the second half when Fluke delivered a ball to Glassberg, who was on the right outside part of the field and rolled a shot to the far front corner of the goal for a 6-0 advantage that started a rolling clock in the game.

With just over 15 minutes left, Fluke added her second goal of the game beating Mariano to the left side of the goal to cap the score at 7-0.

“We’re going really well right now,” said Schaffer. “We have a lot of younger girls that are starting and getting playing time, and they are doing really well.

“I think that as they build experience, and we get acclimated to each other more, we’ll have even more success. We’re starting to see that now.”

The Northwestern defense has allowed just six goals all season, four of which came in its non-league opener against Nazareth. It now has five straight shutouts, with 27 goals of its own during the stretch.

“We knew it was going to be a bit of a learning curve with who we were going to put back there, but after that first game we started to get better and have five straight clean sheets,” said coach Jordan Smith.

“We’ve really worked on that at practice a lot, and any girl who steps onto the field back there is playing really, really well right now.”

Goalie Brystol Hamm was called on to make just two saves. Freshman Jalyssa Kubat relieved Hamm late in the game, but was not needed to make any saves.

CATCHING A BREATH ... After Wednesday’s matchup against Pen Argyl and a Saturday game against Southern Lehigh, the schedule slows down a little. The Tigers will have four days off, which is the longest break in the schedule so far this season. Pen Argyl, Southern Lehigh and Lehighton — who they play after the break — are all road games for Northwestern Lehigh. Northwestern isn’t back at Tiger Stadium until Sept. 28, when it hosts Moravian Academy.
