Lansford Borough Council lost another councilman.

Councilman Jack Soberick submitted his resignation before council’s monthly meeting Wednesday night.

Council President Joe Genits announced that he had a letter from Soberick immediately after roll call in which the first-term councilman and former borough police chief was absent.

“After much consideration, I have decided to resign my position from Lansford Borough Council effective immediately,” Soberick wrote to council.

Genits asked for a motion to accept Soberick’s resignation and Councilman Michele Bartek made the motion and after a long pause, Councilman Bruce Markovich seconded it, saying “if he wants to go, I’ll second.”

Genits asked for a roll-call vote on the resignation, which he accepted with regret. The motion passed 4-2 with Councilmen John Zym and Joe Butrie voting no.

Genits requested the borough secretary send Soberick a letter thanking him for his service on council, and also his prior municipal service to the borough.

Council did not take any action regarding the vacancy, such as seeking letters of interest to fill the position. Council has 30 days to fill the position before the matter goes to a vacancy board, which then has 15 days to act.

Council will likely need a special meeting to fill the vacancy, as their next regular meeting is Oct. 14.

A special meeting is planned next Wednesday for general purposes, as council considers candidates for a full-time borough secretary.

Council hopes to interview secretary candidates before the 7 p.m. meeting. The borough received five applications for the job.
