The “Mountain Road Rumble” rivalry between Northern Lehigh and Northwestern became a one-way street to the end zone for the home team Tigers Thursday night with a 48-0 mercy rule victory over the Bulldogs.

The game-changing play might have happened on the very first possession of the game. The Bulldogs were faced with a fourth down and one at their own 41 and decided to go for the first down, but the Tigers stopped a running play a half-yard short of the chains.

From there, Northwestern mastered a five-play scoring drive that culminated with a 13-yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Trey Snyder to senior wide receiver Brady Zimmerman, last week’s Times News Player of the Week, for a 7-0 lead with 8:57 to go in the first quarter.

On Northern Lehigh’s next possession, Brady Krimmel intercepted a pass to set up the Tigers (2-0) with a first down on their own 18-yard line. Nine plays later, Chase Sukanick — who gained 103 yards on 12 carries in the first half — broke through the middle of the line and weaved his way for an 11-yard touchdown run and a 14-0 Tigers lead at the 4:54 mark of the quarter.

The Bulldogs went three-and-out on their next possession, setting up Northwestern’s offense at its 45-yard line. From there, Snyder led his team’s third drive to paydirt on six plays ending with his beautifully thrown pass to the fingertips of a streaking tight end Harrison Wertman for a 19-yard touchdown.

Down three scores after one quarter, Northern Lehigh (1-1) still could not muster any offense and were forced to punt. The kick landed in the hands of Michael Lagowy at midfield. He broke to the right sideline and scampered 50 yards for a 28-0 lead with 11:39 left to play before the intermission.

The Tigers’ defense was impenetrable, holding the visitors to two first downs (one by penalty) and 41 total first-half yards and only four for the game.

With 5:15 to play in the second quarter, Sukanick finished a seven-play, four-minute drive with a 4-yard burst off tackle to send the Tigers into the locker room ahead 35-0. Northwestern amassed 340 total first half yards, as Snyder was 12-of-15 for 160 yards and two touchdowns.

NL coach Joe Tout said his team ran into a buzz saw.

“We thought we could match up with their speed, but they hit the hammer lane and kept going. Give them credit. They believe they can’t lose, and their confidence is backed up by their performance.”

Northwestern coach Josh Snyder said that he wanted to establish the run game and then add the balance of a passing attack.

“They run a 3-3 stack defense, and we were able to take advantage of the inside box. We set up our screen game off the run, and our big players made big plays.”

With the mercy clock running in the second half, Snyder substituted freely and was proud that his second group added two touchdowns to the big lead.

On their first drive of the second half, quarterback Brady Krimmel led a seven-play, 70-yard drive to the house with Lucian Sterling scoring from four yards out. Tripp Sell finished the point total with a fourth-quarter 11-yard run.

“I told our kids not to hang their heads,” said Tout after the game. “Sure, we’re disappointed we didn’t play better, but lesson learned and we’ll bounce back.”

Tigers’ QB Trey Snyder said everyone played better than in last week’s win over Valley View.

“We had our play action game going tonight, that opened up the pass from the run.”

Sukanick described his running game that had Bulldog defenders missing tackles.

“Once I get through to the second level, I’ll use my speed and cut around tacklers, but if I have to, I’ll drop my shoulder and run through tackles, too.”

Coach Snyder added, “Our offensive line played great and did not give up a sack. We have a few penalties to clean up, but I didn’t see any mental mistakes tonight.”

THE SCHEDULE STREAK CONTINUES ... With the win, Northwestern, with three straight district titles and three straight state final appearances, has now won 34 consecutive regular season games.

THE SERIES STREAK CONTINUES ... Northwestern now leads the series against Northern Lehigh, 27-26, that began in 1971 and have won 11 of the last 13.

LEHIGHTON OFFICIAL NOMINEE ... In a national initiative from a partnership with the NFL and the NFHS (National Federation of High Schools), four members of the game’s officiating crew have been nominated for the Pennsylvania Crew of the Month Award, including side judge Jamie Heydt from Lehighton.
