Most vendors come to the West End Fair to sell something.

The folks at the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation in Monroe County are looking for a few good people for winter employment.

They are set up near gate 1 with a huge yellow plow truck and are offering information on how people can apply for jobs.

Shane Kresge, foreman at the Monroe operation in Stroudsburg, said people stop by and ask how much they can make an hour, what the qualifications are and if the opening will turn into full-time employment.

He tells them temporary winter positions can turn into permanent positions as people retire or leave for other jobs. Five to 10 people are hired in Monroe each year.

A CDL Class A or B license is needed. The applicant must be over 18 and have a clean driving record. Starting wage is $23.46 an hour.

Clerk/dispatcher positions, which start at $18.09 an hour, are also available.

A job fair will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 2 at the shed at 1586 N. Ninth St., Stroudsburg. Interviews will be given on the spot and a driving test and drug screening will follow.

The truck has computer hydraulics, a two-way plow and carries a lot of weight. A fully loaded truck ready for a storm weighs about 70,000 pounds, PennDOT workers said.

There is a lot to think about while driving cautiously and making sure the salt is spreading on the road. In the summer the same trucks are used for hauling stone for blacktopping and other road repairs.

The Monroe district is large, going from the New Jersey state line up to Blakeslee, down to Saylorsburg, north to Price Township and west to Carbon County.

“It’s not for everybody,” Kresge said.
