Lehighton Borough Police Department conducted a DUI checkpoint at two separate locations in the borough this past Friday and Saturday.

The checkpoints were conducted along Sgt. Stanley Hoffman Boulevard (209 Bypass) from 10:15 a.m. to 1:15 a.m., and along Route 443 from 12:30 a.m. to 3 a.m.

According to borough police Chief Troy Abelovsky, borough police made contact with 395 vehicles and issued 15 citations and 30 warnings; field tested 4 individuals for suspicion of driving while impaired; 2 people were found to be under the influence of alcohol and/or a controlled substance and incapable of safely operating a motor vehicle. Borough police are awaiting the official blood results before any formal charges are filed. One additional narcotics arrest was also made.

“The goal of checkpoints is to deter impaired driving and reduce alcohol and narcotics-related crashes by making the risk of being detected higher,” Abelovsky said. “By increasing public awareness through our media releases and actual checkpoint operations, we hope our roads become a little safer to travel.”
