Mahoning Drive-In plans fundraiser to round up cats
A fundraising event will be held to help handle the cost to trap and transport over a dozen cats that have made The Mahoning Drive-In Theater lot their home.
The drive-in posted on its Facebook page Thursday afternoon that it plans to hold a cat-themed screening on Sept. 10 to help the kittens.
“For those of you who are regulars, you know we have a cat situation this season,” the post states. “We have done some sleuthing and discovered a neighbor had been feeding many cats this spring. Well, that neighbor is no longer there and the cats have found a home on our lot
“While we love how much joy these little kitties bring us all; we realize we need to step in to help before the cold months arrive. We felt it was best to hold a fundraising event to help handle the cost to trap and transport them all.
The Mahoning Drive-In posted to stay tuned for details on their cat-themed Sept. 10 screening “to help these sweet kitties.”
It ended by stating “If you would like to help us in this effort, please don’t hesitate to reach out at MahoningDriveinTheater@gmail.com.”
Contacted Friday morning, Virgil Cardamone, owner/operator of the Mahoning Drive-In, said the situation began about a month or two ago.
“It definitely got crazier,” he said. “I think once we realized that one of the ladies was pregnant we knew we had to step in.”
Cardamone said the cats haven’t caused any problems for the drive-in.
“They’re more than welcome on the lot,” he said. “Every year, we have one or two. I think this year it’s a situation that got out of hand.”
Cardamone said they’ll do a family-friendly film, then have intermission, and then do an adult-themed horror film at night.
“People want to see this as an event,” he said. “We’re going to try to get the community involved to have some extra fun on the lot.”
Cardamone encouraged everyone to stay tuned to the drive-in’s social media for details on the event, as well as details on how to help the cats.
