A parent accidentally shot himself in the leg Tuesday morning while securing a handgun in his vehicle outside Hazleton Area High School, according to a news release from the Hazleton Area School District Police Department.
The incident occurred at approximately 8 a.m. as the man had arrived at the school with his child for ninth-grade orientation. The projectile passed through the man’s leg and lodged in the driver’s side door of his vehicle. No other injuries were reported.
The Hazleton Area School District Police Department said the incident remains under investigation and that there is no danger to the general public. Pennsylvania State Police Troop N from Hazleton and Hazle Township Fire and Rescue Company assisted at the scene.
Section 912 of the Pennsylvania Crimes Code, according to police, governs possession of a weapon on school property. Under that statute, a person commits a first-degree misdemeanor if they possess a weapon in the buildings of, on the grounds of, or in any conveyance providing transportation to or from any publicly funded elementary or secondary school, any private elementary or secondary school licensed by the Department of Education, or any parochial school.
