Driver coasts into crash

State police at Frackville reported investigating a crash on Thursday in which the driver's vehicle ran out of gas and he tried to "coast" the vehicle down a steep hill. The incident occurred at 4:10 p.m. along Market Street in Ashland.

Troopers said John S. Schropp, 38, of Shenandoah, was driving a 2012 Ford F150 pickup when it ran out of gas. He then began coasting down Market Street, which troopers said is a steep downhill grade, southbound toward Front Street. Because the engine was not running, the vehicle had no power steering or power brakes. As Schropp approached Front Street, he was unable to stop for a posted stop sign. The truck then crossed Front Street and hit a steel cable guide rail. The truck went partially over the guide rail and its front end dropped off a steep roadside embankment. The truck came to final rest facing east, blocking Front Street completely, with its front end entangled in the guide rail and hanging partially over the embankment.Schropp was not injured but the truck had to be towed. Troopers cited Schropp for the crash.
