Letter to the editor: Reassessment would have affect

I am writing this in response to a few articles and letters I have read in your publication this week.

First I would like to address Mr. Socha’s article. I think he is talking about county taxes. If that were the case, I think most people would survive the increase.

But we all know that school taxes would go through the roof. I can hear the school boards drooling already. Mr. Socha also states that, the true market value of housing is up.

Those with lakefront properties, and commercial development will see taxes go up. Well even half of a double home’s value has doubled or tripled.

He states that a third of the properties will have an increase in taxes, a third will stay the same, and a third will be lowered. When has anyone’s taxes stayed the same or decreased after a reassessment?

He is definitely not considering the school tax increase, or is he considering the hardship that would be placed on the senior population living on a social security check. They were kind enough do a “Payment Plan” to pay the school taxes. So thoughtful.

After reading the article of unfunded mandates, I am not convinced that the commissioners are against the reassessment because of its unfairness, but more about the county being stuck with the $12,000,000 bill to fund it. I built my house with my own two hands, and any improvements done, my wife and I did them.

Now I’ll have to take a home-equity loan to pay for all the tax bills. How much do these people think you can stretch a S.S. check? Oh, I know I will stop eating and taking my meds.
