American Legion Sons

Tonight, beginning at 6 p.m., the Sons of the American Legion, Post 927, will hold its monthly meeting from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Legion Building in Gilbert.

Volleyball tonight

The Effort UMC Pavilion will host a volleyball game from 7 to 9 p.m., tonight.

Lock-in set

The Youth Lock-in at Effort UMC is taking place this weekend.

Shoe collection

The shoe collection at Effort UMC to benefit Bowman Park camp will end on Aug. 8.

Old shoes or gently used ones can be dropped in the bin is located in the church narthex.

Food pantry open

The SFRC food pantry at Effort UMC will be open from 10 a.m. to noon, Saturday.

Current requested donations for the pantry are cereal, granola bars, canned goods, juice boxes, snacks, lunch items or any nonperishable item.

Outdoor service

St. Matthew’s ECC, Kunkletown, has slated its upcoming worship service in the grove. It begins at 9 a.m. Worshippers are reminded to bring a lawn chair.

New clergy

Our Lady Queen of Peace Church has welcomed two new priests: the Rev. Gregory Reichlen and the Rev. Jan Carlo Perez.

Women’s Club

The Pocono Women’s Club will meet at 7 p.m. Monday in Wesley Hall at Effort UMC.

Bog walks continue

The Monroe County Conservation District’s Kettle Creek Environmental Education Center has announced that its guided weekly Tannersville Bog Walks are now underway Wednesdays through Sept. 9. They begin at 10 a.m. and are guided by an Environmental Educator from the center.

Bereavement programs

St. Luke’s Hospice Bereavement Program can be reached at 484-526-2499. Several support groups are on the program’s agenda including one at the Western Pocono Community Library although not in August.

The next meeting of the West End group will be held from 1 to 2:30 p.m. n Sept. 16.

In the interim, one can consider attending Good Grief Workshops, recommended for those after 4 to 6 weeks of their loss.

The next one is from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 12, and the following one is scheduled for 1 to 2:30 p.m. on Aug. 20.

Monroe County Seniors

The group of Monroe County Seniors, which meets at Zion Lutheran Church, Brodheadsville, will be meeting, socializing, eating lunch and enjoying other activities from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. each Wednesday and Monday.

Currently, all Monroe County Senior Centers are accepting: 300 to 500-piece jigsaw puzzles, acrylic paints, blank canvases, holiday decorations, paperware and party goods.

This list includes the only donations being accepted at all Monroe County Senior Centers.

Hot dog sale set

The West End Fire Company is holding a hot dog sale from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Aug. 13, at Kinsley’s ShopRite in Brodheadsville.

Farmers Market

Zion Lutheran Church, Brodheadsville, will host its next Farmers Market from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Aug. 15, on the church grounds in Brodheadsville.

Backpacks blessing

College-bound students from Our Lady Queen of Peace Church were invited to attend any Mass on Aug. 1 or 2 before heading to campus to receive a blessing and a treat from the parish.

All area school students attending Our Lady Queen of Peace Church are reminded that their backpacks will be blessed at any Mass, either on Aug. 29 or 30.

In addition, a special treat from the parish will be given to each student.

Pierogi sale

The Pleasant Valley Ecumenical Network is currently selling frozen pierogies.

Orders, from The Pierogi Kings, will be accepted through Aug. 15.

Each order consists of one dozen frozen pierogies. Flavors include: cheddar, buffalo chicken, jalapeño, garlic, bacon and apple.

Pickup will be at the PVEN pantry’s office from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., on Sept. 2 and 3, and from 8 a.m. to noon on Sept. 4.

The orders will help support the various PVEN pantries and programs.

Charity event

AltruVision, a Lions Eye Bank, has announced its 32nd Annual Gift of Sight Charity Golf Classic, Swinging Fore A Cause. The purpose is to help restore sight and transform lives.

It will take place at Ron Jaworski Blue Heron Pines Golf Club in Egg Harbor City, N.J., on Sept. 28.
