They bring local customs and traditions to the forefront.

On top of that, they raise money for local groups and good causes.

Perhaps most importantly, they bring people together.

It is for those reasons and many more that fairs and festivals remain woven into the fabric of our culture.

Fair season has indeed arrived in our region, ushered in by the Schuylkill County Fair.

Located at the county fairgrounds along Route 895 in Summit Station, it got underway Monday and ran through today, complete with food, entertainment, agricultural exhibits, music, and more.

Next on the horizon is the Carbon County Fair, set to kick off Monday and run through Saturday at the Carbon County Fairgrounds, 3285 Little Gap Road, Palmerton.

Hours are 4-10 p.m. Monday through Friday and 2-10 p.m. Saturday.

Admission is $7 every day for those age 6 and older. Parking is free.

Just to the northeast of that will be the West End Fair, which runs Aug. 23-29 at 570 Fairgrounds Road, Gilbert.

A few short weeks after that, the Palmerton Community Festival steps off Sept. 11-13 in the Palmerton Borough Park.

Seemingly at a time when our society faces a social disconnect, fairs and festivals can be a breath of fresh air.

They are a nod to a time when communities gathered together in real time, as in live and in-person.

It’s a time where people actually socialize with one another live and in living color, rather than on their electronic devices.

They allow us to spend time outdoors to become one with nature.

They take us away from distractions as we leave our worries, and devices, behind.

Not to mention they keep us active and can be a great form of exercise.

Sometimes it can be quite cathartic to take in the sights and sounds of the great outdoors.

Did I mention they’re also known to feature plenty of homemade Pennsylvania Dutch cooking and other goodies?

From sausage sandwiches and fresh-cut french fries to funnel cakes and waffles and ice cream, the offerings are endless.

So, what delicacy should I indulge in first?

With such a wide assortment to choose from, the possibilities are endless.

In the mood for entertainment?

Music is another staple of these events that stimulates the brain.

Did I hear the word “fun”?

Countless rides and games are another aspect to help give younger generations plenty of thrills and friendly competition.

Above all else, these functions foster a sense of camaraderie and a feeling of togetherness that otherwise doesn’t seem to exist quite as often these days.

And remember that your patronage at these venues helps support your respective community and build overall morale.

All of that is what makes fairs and festivals timeless.
