A 17-year-old Coaldale boy led Tamaqua police on a 10-mile high speed chase in a vehicle he stole around 9:15 p.m. July 17.

The teen is now facing charges of fleeing from police, theft, receiving stolen property, reckless endangerment and reckless driving.

According to police, officers were dispatched to a call for a stolen vehicle and spoke to the victim, who said his 1996 Ford Ranger pickup could be started without a key.

Police spotted the vehicle driving east on Ruddle Street and activated their emergency lights and siren. As they did so, the vehicle accelerated to a high rate of speed as it traveled on Ridge Street and almost struck another vehicle at Ridge and Fifth streets.

The high-speed pursuit continued through Coaldale and onto Route 209, when the driver accelerated up to 80 mph. Police said the teen nearly struck several other vehicles on Route 209.

The pursuit continued into Tamaqua and onto Route 309, traveling through Rush Township and onto Plant Road in Kline Township.

At that point, the driver slowed down and police were able to apprehend him.

He was taken to the Tamaqua Police Department and turned over to the Schuylkill County Juvenile Probation Department.
