Ashley Kane, 37, of Tamaqua, was committed to the Schuylkill County Prison on strangulation and other charges filed by borough police.

According to police, officers were sent to the unit block of East Elm Street at 11:28 a.m. July 17 for a domestic violence incident. Police could hear yelling and screaming from the second floor of the home.

Police said Kane appeared emotionally distressed when she met them at the front door. The woman she fought with, Danielle Monally, 29, also met with police, and while officers were speaking to them, the two continued to fight.

Officers then spoke to Monally, who said Kane slapped and choked her. She said that Kane held her down, sat on top of her, and covered her mouth and nose to prevent the victim from breathing. Monally said she began to turn blue and feared for her life.

Kane said Monally bit and hit her.

Both women were taken to the Tamaqua Police station. While in custody, police checked on Kane every 15 minutes. At one point, officers heard screams for help and ran to the cell room.

Officers said Kane took a string from her sweatpants and wrapped it around her neck. Police said the other end was tied to the cell bars.

Police said Kane did not lose consciousness and continued to scream for help when officers cut the noose. She was checked by Tamaqua Ambulance personnel and released back into police custody.

Kane was arraigned before Magisterial District Judge Anthony Kilker on charges of aggravated assault, strangulation, simple assault, harassment and disorderly conduct and sent to prison in lieu of $50,000 cash bail.

Police charged Monally with simple assault, harassment and disorderly conduct.

Officers said the two frequently fight, and earlier in the month, Kane was charged with disorderly conduct for fighting with Monally in the street. In the July 9 incident, police said Kane pulled Monally’s hair as the two fought.
