State police at Fern Ridge - crashes

State police at the Fern Ridge barracks reported the following crashes:

• Four people were transported by personnel from the Lehighton Ambulance Association to the St. Luke’s Hospital, Carbon Campus, Franklin Township, following a two-vehicle crash at 2:29 p.m. July 13 at the intersection of South Old Stage Road and Penn Forest Trail, Penn Forest Township.

Police said Nicole A. Taylor, 41, and Dusty Johnson, 41, both of Red Lion, and Alexander Vitti Jr., 68, and Linda A. Vitti, 68, both of Albrightsville, were the victims of the crash. They said Johnson had suspected serious injuries, while the severity of the injuries to the others are unknown.

Police said the crash occurred as Taylor was driving a 2019 Kia Sedona west on Penn Forest Trail when she failed to yield to oncoming traffic. The vehicle entered the intersection, colliding with a 2019 Ram truck driven by Alexander Vitti. They said the impact caused the Kia to hit a utility pole on the side of the road.

Both vehicles were towed from the scene.

Taylor was cited for after the crash, according to police.

• Kolby J. Cavanaugh, 19, of Jim Thorpe, and Brianna A. Heller, 19, of Slatington, had suspected minor injuries after a one-vehicle crash at 2:42 a.m. June 6 on East Old Stage Road, Penn Forest Township.

Police said they were transported by personnel from the Lehighton Ambulance Association to the St. Luke’s Hospital, Carbon Campus, Franklin Township.

They said the crash occurred as Cavanaugh was driving a 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan east when it left the roadway and hit a culvert, rocks and a utility pole before rolling onto its roof and striking a tree. It had disabling damage.

Cavanaugh was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol or a controlled substance and cited for failure to drive at a safe speed, according to police.

• Two people had injuries of unknown severity after a two-vehicle crash at 8:30 p.m. June 3 at the intersection of the Jonas and Merwinsburg roads in Chestnuthill Township.

Police said Joseph P. Hanyon, 61, of Brodheadsville, was transported by personnel from the Lehigh Valley Health Network EMS corps to the St. Luke’s Hospital, Carbon Campus, Franklin Township, while Jose M. Rodriguez Hernandez, 40, of Allentown, was taken by the corps to the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Pocono Campus, East Stroudsburg.

Police said the crash occurred when Antonio Flores Mendoza, 39, of Allentown, was driving a 2012 Hino conventional-type truck east on the Jonas Road when he attempted to turn right onto the Merwinsburg Road, lost control of the vehicle and it turned onto its left side.

They said Hanyon, who was northbound in a 2024 Land Rover on the Merwinsburg Road, took evasive action to try to avoid the Hino but the latter struck the Land Rover.

The Hino had functional minor damage, while the Land Rover had disabling damage and was towed from the scene.

Rodriguez Hernandez was a passenger in the Hino, police said.

Flores Mendoza was cited after the crash, according to police.
