Northampton woman loses $5,000 in scam

A 64-year-old Northampton woman lost $5,000 in a theft by deception scam, state police at the Bethlehem barracks said.

The woman came to their barracks at 2:21 p.m. June 24 to report that an unknown person who identified himself as an FBI agent told her that he recovered $10,000 in a Bitcoin account that had accrued $2,000, police said.

She said the person told her she could obtain the $12,000 by sending Apple gift cards as payments.

The woman said that her brother advised her it was a scam and brought her to the barracks, where it was determined that she had lost the $5,000 in the scheme, police said.
