Vehicle hits barrier on turnpike

State police at the Pocono barracks said Melissa C. Ashford, 34, of Lyndonville, Vermont, and Michael R. Berry, 65, of Shavertown, were involved in a two-vehicle crash at 2:25 p.m. June 27 at mile marker 83.1 of the Northeast extension in Penn Forest Township.

Police said Berry was transported by personnel from the Lehighton Ambulance Association to the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Carbon Campus, Mahoning Township, while Ashford did not require an emergency medical services transport from the scene.

They said the incident occurred when Ashford was driving a 2015 Honda Odyssey northbound when it traveled into “standing water,” causing her to lose control of the vehicle. It struck a concrete barrier and then a 2024 Hyundai Tucson operated by Berry in the right lane before striking another barrier off the east shoulder of the road.

Police said after it was struck on the driver’s side door, the Tucson struck a concrete barrier before coming to rest.

Four passengers with Ashford, children aged 1, 4, 6 and 7 who were in either safety seats or booster seats, were uninjured.

Police said both vehicles were towed from the scene.
