Man charged after stop, had false ID, violations

A man faces charges after providing false identification to police following a traffic stop in Palmerton on Friday.

Palmerton Borough Police patrolman Adam Shimer said the Palmerton Police Department conducted a traffic stop after an officer observed a vehicle displaying a New Jersey registration plate that was not assigned to the vehicle.

During the investigation, the driver initially identified himself as Steven Hill and provided false identifying information. Further investigation, including verification of the vehicle identification number, determined the driver’s identity to be Alexander Riepensell.

Police discovered the vehicle was displaying an improperly assigned New Jersey registration plate while its valid Pennsylvania registration was suspended due to an insurance cancellation. Investigators also located the vehicle’s correct registration plate and an additional registration plate inside the vehicle.

Riepensell had a suspended driver’s license and an active arrest warrant from Lehigh County. Following his arrest, he allegedly admitted to placing the incorrect registration plate on the vehicle to avoid detection by law enforcement due to the outstanding warrant.

Riepensell was charged with obstruction of the administration of law, false identification to law enforcement, and multiple summary traffic violations.

He was arraigned before a magisterial district judge and committed to the Carbon County Correctional Facility after failing to post $5,000 bail.
