Carbon County Commissioners

The Carbon County commissioners acted on the following items during their meeting on Wednesday. The meeting had been moved from Thursday because of Union Pacific’s Big Boy visit to Jim Thorpe.

• Received a letter from Jim Thorpe Borough noting that a recent request for the area in the Mauch Chunk Train Station that was formerly occupied by Mauch Chunk Trust Company. The bank vacated the first floor tower office at the end of last year.

The letter states that the county’s request for tax exemption has been reviewed and approved because it is now being utilized by a tax-exempt organization.

• Approved a recommendation for Serving Seniors Inc. to provide Ombudsman Services.

• Reappointed Michael Radocha of Nesquehoning to a five-year term on the Redevelopment Authority. The term expires May 5, 2031.

• Approved a representation letter with Maher Duessel Certified Public Accountants of Pittsburgh to audit the financial statements for Carbon County 911 for 2023, 2024 and 2025. This is contracted by the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency.

• Approved a grant application to the U.S. Department of Justice, Community Oriented Policing Services, Technology and Equipment Program requesting $2.1 million to use for the purchase of P25 compliant tower site equipment for five communications/911 sites.

• Approved an application for funding through the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency’s 2026/2027 Byrne Justice Assistance Grant in the amount of $250,000 to use toward P25 compliant radio equipment for Carbon County law enforcement personnel.

• Approved a grant application for a performance grant through the Federal Emergency Management Agency in the amount of $60,000 to support salaries and benefits of the Emergency Management coordinator and administrative assistant.

• Reappointed Bruce Berger, Albrightsville Fire Company, to a four-year term to the board of directors for the Emergency Operations and Training Center. Berger was recommended by the Carbon County Firemen’s Association.

• Approved an agreement with the Carbon County Action Committee for Human Services to provide assistance under the Homeless Assistance Program guidelines, as well as through the Human Services Development Fund program, both through June 30, 2027. The funding for these agreements are $27,359 and $50,000 respectively.

• Approved renewal agreements with IntegraOne of Allentown for various IT-related programs at various county departments. The total cost is $22,390.74.

• Authorized Opioid Settlement Funds for four National Night Out events. Lehighton, Nesquehoning, Palmerton and Weatherly police departments each received $5,000 to help with outreach and recovery support materials during the events.

• Approved a grant application to the U.S. Department of Justice, Community Oriented Policing Services, Technology and Equipment Program to secure funding for the sheriff’s office toughbooks. The requested amount is $60,000.

• Approved an agreement with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, acting through the Department of Agriculture and the Carbon County Area Agency on Aging, for participation in the 2026 Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program through Jan. 30, 2027. The funds total $1,500.

• Approved an agreement with Yvonne Tarchak to fill the position as Share Housing counselor through the SHARE Housing Match Up pilot program, a program aimed at addressing the increasing need for affordable housing options for seniors. The cost shall not exceed $47,754 annually with mileage reimbursement set at 73 cents a mile.

• Approved a special activities agreement with Pocono Television Network for a video shoot for a series titled “Eric Mintel, Investigator” concerning Big Foot. The shoot takes place at Mauch Chunk Lake Park from 5-9 p.m. on July 8.

• Adopted a resolution acknowledging the 150th anniversary of Lansford.
