Crews rescue three from Lehigh River in Walnutport

No one was injured after a successful water rescue on the Lehigh River Saturday night in Walnutport.

Diamond Fire Company of Walnutport fire Chief Mike Wentz said firefighters responded at around 10 p.m. for a report of a swiftwater rescue.

Wentz said upon arrival, there was a group of three people — a mom, dad and daughter — on a big raft, none of whom were injured.

“We got there and we went to the bridge, there was no one visible; however, they were on the river,” Wentz said. “No one was hurt, but they were in distress because they couldn’t find a way to get off; it was dark, they lost their bearings, and they really did not know where the boat ramp was.”

Wentz said the whole time the Lehigh County Communication Center stayed on the phone with them and he coordinated with them until they got to the point where they could definitely see the bridge.

“Kept talking with them and got to the point where we had people in place to retrieve them and get them out of the water,” he said. “We had to put a lot of things into place to make sure this all happened.”

Wentz said that included keeping the people on the phone with the communications center and keep in constant contact with them, adding, “the people working were fabulous, giving me updates every couple of minutes, saying this is where they were at.” Initially, he said it was showing right around the Slatington Airport.

“The first thing we did was get one truck on the boat ramp and the other truck on the bridge and put that light tower up so they could see the truck up on the bridge, and it lit up north of the bridge,” Wentz said. “At least they had an idea where the boat ramp was so they could start making their way up that way.”

From there, he said “We got people in full rescue gear, we set a line system up with ropes and put people under the bridge so we were able to get them to the side.

Wentz said Slatington was on their side of the bridge, and down further Lehigh Township was out and Northampton was out on the boat ramp on the North Whitehall side, “So in case people got by us, we had resources set up to grab them and get them off in case we missed them.”

He said emergency personnel were on scene for about 45 minutes, and also included the Slatington Fire Department, Lehigh Township Fire Department, Northampton Fire Department, Lehighton Fire Department Water Rescue team, Northern Valley Ambulance Association, and Walnutport Police Department.

“I can’t say enough,” Wentz said. “Every time we’ve had something down there, our police are right there.”

As for the water rescue, he noted, “Everything was like clockwork, from the comm center staying in contact with them and giving me updates to all the assistance we had and everybody went in place.

“It was everybody working together and the great teamwork,” Wentz said. “We had a very successful outcome.”
