Tamaqua police cited four teenagers for underage drinking following an 11:14 p.m. June 15 incident in the area of the Dutch Hill playground near Biddle Street.
Police said they were dispatched to the site for a report of juveniles breaking bottles. When they arrived, police found five teenagers gathered near a pickup truck.
Police immediately detected an odor of alcohol coming from the group. While talking to the teens, police said each showed signs of alcohol consumption, including bloodshot eyes and slurred speech. Preliminary breath tests administered on the scene revealed positive readings for alcohol, police said.
Two 13-year-olds, one 14-year-old and a 15-year-old were taken into custody and issued a total of six non-traffic citations for underage drinking and associated offenses. The boys were then released to their guardians.
A 17-year-old boy, police said, was on hand but was not drinking.
In addition, officers said the operator of the vehicle at the scene showed no signs of impairment. He was released with a warning regarding curfew compliance.
During the investigation, officers obtained consent to search the vehicle and located alcoholic beverages. Additional items seized from the juveniles included vaping devices. Information obtained during the investigation indicates the alcohol may have been purchased outside the borough, police said.
Police remind parents and guardians of the importance of monitoring juvenile activity and discussing the dangers and legal consequences associated with underage drinking.
