Charges filed in armed robbery
A Slatington man faces multiple charges for an armed robbery at a Mahoning Township smoke shop Sunday night.
Damian Messinger, 22, of West South Street, was arraigned Monday afternoon on charges of robbery - threat of serious injury, two counts; criminal use of a communication facility, possession of a weapon and receiving stolen property.
District Judge Beth Dodson in Lansford set bail at $75,000 unsecured, and a preliminary hearing on charges, three of which are felonies, is set for June 17.
According to the criminal complaint, state police responded to a report of an armed robbery at the PA Smoke Shop on Blakeslee Boulevard just before 9 p.m.
Troopers interviewed the clerks, who also provided video surveillance footage, showing a man in a blue sweatshirt, black pants and camouflage mask brandish a firearm and steal a glass bong valued at $100, court papers said.
Additional surveillance footage from Giant grocery store showed the man, who was later identified as Messinger, was driven to and from the shop in a Honda Civic, and troopers secured the license plate information from a Flock system camera, court papers said.
Troopers tracked down the vehicle’s owner, and then the driver, who provided a text threat from Messinger relating that he was going to steal the bong and listed the address of the PA Smoke Shop, and he admitted to driving Messinger to the shop, court papers said.
Two other people were also in the vehicle when Messinger came out of the shop with the bong, court papers said. The driver of the vehicle told troopers that he knew Messinger had guns, which had permits, but did not know a firearm had been used in the theft, court papers said.
Troopers then confirmed the phone number from the text thread belonged to Messinger and used his driver’s license image to compare to the video surveillance images. Troopers also found an incident report from the Slatington Police Department in which Messinger had been involved in an argument and lifted his shirt to show a concealed gun, which was like the way the gun was displayed in the armed robbery.
