Slatington presents fire truck payment option
Slatington Borough Council has presented a financing proposal for the purchase of the borough’s new fire truck, outlining how the $1.2 million cost would be divided between the borough and the Slatington Fire Department.
The proposal surfaced at the end of Monday’s council meeting after Deputy Fire Chief Jason Nicholas asked during public comment whether a decision had been made on financing the truck.
“I would like to know if anything has been decided about financing the new fire truck,” Nicholas asked.
After the meeting was adjourned, Mayberry approached fire Chief Justin Frable and handed him a written proposal detailing funding terms for the purchase.
Under the proposal, the cost of the truck would be split on a 2-to-1 basis, with the borough paying $800,000 and the fire department responsible for the remaining $400,000.
The proposal states the department may obtain a loan of $353,547 to cover most of its share, with the borough providing no assistance in repaying that debt.
The department would also contribute $46,453 to meet its full obligation. Proceeds from the sale of two fire trucks the department had planned to sell would be applied toward the borough’s portion of the purchase.
In addition, the proposal calls for the $40,000 budgeted annually for a fire commissioner position to be returned to the borough going forward to help meet its obligations.
The department would continue to receive more than $10,000 budgeted from the sewer note.
The proposal also requests that the fire department share its recent financial reports with council.
In other business, council approved a commitment letter for a 2026 state Greenways Grant application seeking $250,000 for the revitalization of Roosevelt Park.
The total cost of the park project is estimated at $378,968.
