Panther Vy. inks $1.59M roof pact

A leaking roof at the Panther Valley Junior-Senior High School will be replaced.

During a special meeting this week, school board directors voted unanimously to approve a $1.59 million agreement with The Garland Company for the work.

The district has been experiencing ongoing roofing system deficiencies and water infiltration issues at the building, which are covered under warranty by The Garland Company.

“The Garland Company has offered a capital replacement credit consisting of roofing membrane materials and adhesives at no cost to the district, representing an estimated value of approximately $500,000, toward the installation of a new high-performance roofing system,” according to the motion approved by directors.

Under the proposed agreement, the district would be responsible for labor costs and miscellaneous materials at an estimated price of $1.59 million.

The replacement roofing system will come with a 25-year warranty from Garland, which is headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio.

“The Board of School Directors has determined that replacement of the existing roofing system is in the best interest of the District,” according to the agenda.

Earlier this year, photos posted to social media showed dark stains on ceiling tiles at the high school caused by leaks from the asphalt covered roof.

District officials stressed that it wasn’t mold but discoloration from the leaks.

The district began working with its roofing contractor and district maintenance personnel to stave off further damages.

Last summer, the district used a $100,000 state grant to repair the roof’s failing edge system. Roof drains that were leaking were also replaced with the funding.
