Nesquehoning
Historical Society
The Nesquehoning Historical Society has announced the third event in a series of local history presentations as part of the town’s America250 Celebration.
The presentation, “The Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company’s Room Run Railroad” takes place at 6 p.m. on June 2 and 1 p.m. on June 6. Doors open an hour before the presentation.
Historian Vince Hydro will talk about the completion of the Mauch Chunk gravity railroad, later more famously known as the Switchback, and how the LC&N constructed its second gravity railroad, from Nesquehoning to schutes on the Lehigh River at Mauch Chunk. The Room Run railroad hauled coal from the Room Run mines, located just southwest of Nesquehoning, from 1833 until 1869, when the Nesquehoning mines were connected to the Nesquehoning Valley Railroad.
Following his presentation, Hydro will be signing copies of his book: “History of the Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company’s Room Run Gravity Railroad,” as well as copies of his other self-published books.
The event will take place at the society’s museum, 157 W. Railroad St., and is open to the public free of charge, although donations to the historical society are always welcome.
