Colts capture D-11 baseball crown

Marian earns 1-0 victory over Tri-Valley behind shutout pitching from Grier and outstanding defense to claim 2A crown

FOUNTAIN SPRINGS — The underdogs found a way to dethrone the team many believed was destined to win the District 11 Class 2A championship.

There is a place for doubters, and it does not wear blue and gold.

Marian finally broke Tri-Valley’s stranglehold on the district title Wednesday afternoon at Robert Wetzel Baseball Stadium on the North Schuylkill campus.

Behind the superb pitching of Chase Grier, airtight defense and textbook execution, the Colts earned a 1-0 victory.

Baseball purists would have appreciated the sharp pitching, defensive playmaking and managerial strategy that shaped the outcome.

Marian entered as the underdog against the Bulldogs, the powerful team from Schuylkill League Division 1. But Grier kept Tri-Valley hitters off balance with a devastating breaking ball. He consistently worked both sides of the plate and never lost composure, even after the Bulldogs loaded the bases with one out.

“I can’t say enough about my defense behind me,” Grier, a junior, said. “I mean there was our third baseman (Noah) Bauder making some unbelievable plays. Gosh, I can’t be more thankful than Roman’s (Bednarek) play and how about (Brayden) Grant. They made plays and helped this team win a championship.”

Bauder, nicknamed “Eureka the Vacuum,” made four outstanding defensive plays. But the biggest came in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Marian clung to a one-run lead as Tri-Valley threatened to rally. Grier retired the No. 2 hitter to begin the inning, but back-to-back singles by Braeden Doyle and Gavin Klock put pressure on the Colts. Peyton Schley then walked to load the bases.

Grier responded by inducing a ground ball to Bednarek, who stepped on second base and fired to first for an inning-ending double play that shifted momentum firmly toward Marian.

“It was funny, my assistant coach Justin Gutsie turned to me and said, ‘what we need is a ground ball to Roman to turn a double play,’” Marian manager John “Pilsey” Petrilyak said.

Prophetic, indeed.

The game unfolded as a classic pitchers’ duel between Grier and Tri-Valley ace Doyle.

Doyle allowed only a third-inning single to freshman Danny Lemus through four innings. Marian finally broke through in the fifth by manufacturing a run.

Bauder reached on an infield single, and Petrilyak stuck with small-ball tactics by having Lemus bunt him over. Another infield hit by Cole Jordan put runners on the corners and set the stage for the game’s only run.

Grant, batting from the left side, lifted a fly ball to right field deep enough for Bauder to tag and score for a 1-0 lead.

That was all Marian needed.

By the fifth inning, Grier had thrown just 65 pitches while retiring the side in order. After escaping the sixth-inning jam, he returned for the seventh and needed only seven pitches to close out the victory. The final out was fielded cleanly by second baseman Grant, who flipped to Jordan.

The celebration erupted as Marian captured its first district baseball championship since 2023.

Senior captain Cole DeFrancesco clutched the championship trophy tightly after the final out.

“This one is so special, I remember my freshman year, now I got another one my senior year, what more can I ask for. I am so happy,” he said.

The title also meant plenty to catcher Ethan Labenburg.

“I didn’t play my freshman year, but these past two seasons I had the opportunity to help the team, and this one means so much to me,” said Labenburg, the tough-minded catcher who sets the tone for Marian’s pitching staff.

For Petrilyak, the victory carried deep personal meaning.

“I’m headed up to my (fathers) grave and putting the (trophy) right on top of the marker,” he said emotionally.
