Coaldale hopes to install new memorial garden lights
Coaldale is hoping to install new lights in its memorial garden next to borough hall.
“Over the years, and it’s just wear and tear, but they are broken, leaning,” borough council President Rosie Hoban said during a recent meeting.
Spotlights that shine on flags are mounted on wood, which is rotting, she noted.
“They just need to be replaced,” Hoban said.
Benches are being refurbished, too. There’s a chance that students enrolled in vocational/technical school will help with the repairs.
Hoban said the borough hoped to install electricity to the monument in Seek but there is nowhere to hook up to the service.
“We can get solar lights possibly to highlight the flags down there,” she said. “It’s for our veterans.”
She noted that ahead of Memorial Day, borough crews are cutting grass and sprucing up the areas.
Memorial services Sunday
Memorial Day Services will be held Sunday at noon at the Seek Memorial and at 1 p.m. at borough hall.
In keeping with Memorial Day, borough workers recently began hanging about 50 veterans banners.
The borough had more, but some were showing signs of age.
“There were really a few that were faded that are not going to go back up again,” Hoban said. “We have reached out to the people who had the banners to see if they wanted to replace them.”
Replacements cost $125, and new banners — for those who don’t already have one — cost $200.
The banners will be hung on Phillips Street between East and Seventh streets. In addition, they’ll be placed near borough hall, Seek Memorial, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.
