Lehighton, Palmerton pools delay opening due to weather
Municipalities are looking at the weather forecast and hoping for the best in opening their public pools this Memorial Day weekend.
Both Palmerton Memorial Pool and Baer Memorial Swimming Pool in Lehighton had hoped to open on Saturday.
However, the Palmerton Memorial Park Association posted on its Facebook page Thursday night that it will be closed on Saturday.
The post states that its pool manager is closely analyzing the weather Sunday and Monday to see if there are any breaks where it can open.
The Palmerton Memorial Pool will be open from 3:30 to 7 p.m. this coming Tuesday through Friday, the post states.
There will be no early adult lap swim on the first day.
While Palmerton Area School District is in school, the pool will be open from 3:30 to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Regular pool hours begin June 6, Sunday through Saturday from noon to 8 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon, adult lap swim only.
Lee Arner, general manager for Palmerton Memorial Pool, noted this will mark the 79th annual opening for the pool.
“New features include parts of the pool painted, pumps serviced and replaced where necessary, (and) the grant study,” Arner said. “The other very large project is we replaced the sand filter media in the filter tanks for the pool.”
Swim lessons begin June 15 and run Monday through Friday at a designated time assigned (either 9:30 a.m. or 10:30 a.m.).
Jittery Joins water aerobics class begins at 10 a.m. on July 6, and runs for four weeks, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 10 to 11 a.m. They will also offer lap swimming for adults only at that time.
The cost for daily admission is $12 for adults (ages 18 to 61), and $8 for children (ages 2 to 17) and senior citizens (ages 62 to 84).
The cost for out-of-state admission is $15 for adults, and $10 for children. Admission is free for children under the age of 2, and adults over the age of 85.
There is a military discount of $25 total off the price of the membership that they are actively on.
Swim lessons start on June 19. A season membership and preregistration is needed.
Season passes are available at pmpapool.org.

Baer Memorial Swimming Pool
Likewise, Baer Memorial Swimming Pool in Lehighton had also been scheduled to open Saturday, weather pending.
Contacted Friday morning, borough recreation director Tom Evans said they are not opening Saturday or Sunday.
Instead, Evans said the pool has a tentative opening on Monday, but added that is up in the air.
From that point, it would be open every day from noon to 7 p.m., Evans said.
Evans said pool memberships are available for Carbon County residents. Daily admission is $12 for adults, and $8 for children.
Also this year, Lehighton will open its pool up to Tamaqua and Slatington residents.
“It’s the right neighborly thing to do,” Evans said.
The out-of-county day pass cost for Tamaqua and Slatington zip code residents to attend Baer Memorial Swimming Pool will be $15 for adults, and $10 for children.
The Tamaqua pool will be closed for the season while upgrades are completed. A start date for the H.D. Buehler Memorial Pool project at Bungalow Park had yet to be set. Most of the work will be completed by mid-October, with final completion expected in April of 2027.
Beginning this year, the Northern Lehigh Swimming Pool Association will resume full operational responsibilities for the Northern Lehigh Swimming Pool.
Previously, the Northern Lehigh Recreation Authority managed and operated the pool.
Swimming lessons are offered with the Lehighton pool membership, Evans said, and added they also give private lessons. Evening lessons will be at June 8 with morning lessons at 10:30 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. starting June 18. There are also water aerobics.
He said the Summer Youth Program begins July 13 at Baer Memorial and will run for two weeks, and it’s free.
Evans said new this year is a large umbrella after the Lehighton Pool Pals donated $7,500.
Also, he said Lehighton Pool Pals donated 31 family pool passes, which cost $10,000.
“I’m very fortunate to have a group as supportive like Pool Pals, and we have a great community,” Evans said. “I’d like to thank BHA with their job training, along with Community Service Program through the county, for helping with painting, maintenance, and cleanup.”
Evans said the pool also features a concession stand he said is akin to a “mini restaurant,” and praised the solar panels they have to heat the pool.
He said they also have three pavilion rentals to rent out daily for parties.
Evans said the pool will host a Christmas in July event.

Northern Lehigh Swimming Pool
The Northern Lehigh Swimming Pool hopes to open June 6.
There will a Swim Day free of charge on June 9, which will coincide with the Northern Lehigh 250 Celebration.
Aqua Aerobics will be Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 to 11 a.m. starting June 15.
Swim lessons will be June 29 to July 2 and July 6 to 9. The pool is also available for private pool rentals.
Katherine Barhight Herzog, president of the Northern Lehigh Swimming Pool Association, noted they had a volunteer day in which they had over 50 people show up to help clean up the facility, which included kids, coaches, and members of the community, and that she’s “very proud of the community.”
“Our board of volunteers are constantly working hard to fundraise and trying to improve the pool and to keep it running,” she said. “It definitely has been a group effort and I am so thankful for all our volunteers and community support.”
She added, “We are looking forward as the Northern Lehigh Swimming Pool Association to be running the pool again since the Northern Lehigh Rec Authority financially couldn’t make it work.
“We are looking forward to having a great summer,” she said. “We look forward to seeing all the families and kids enjoying the pool this summer.”
