The possible role of the No. 9 mine in Lansford as a future tourist attraction was discussed by the Panther Valley Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors at last night’s monthly meeting held at the Viennese Villa, Coaldale. President Henry Bayarsky was in charge.
It is known that the Lansford company plans to cease operations at the mine, which is the oldest operating anthracite mine in the world. One of the directors reported he had contact with an individual who had interest in the tourist potential of the mine but had inquired about cost figures.
The first step in pursuing this concept is to reach out to the Greenwood Mining Company, which owns the mine, to determine if it is interested in selling or leasing the property, chamber members said.
