Carbon school retirees honor Palmerton educators

The Carbon County Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees held its spring membership meeting on Thursday, May 7 at St. Joseph Parish of the Panther Valley in Summit Hill.

The PASR presented the Loretta Woodson Award to two educators from the Palmerton School District. Each year a different school district is chosen; this year, it was Palmerton.

The recipients were Wanda Solt and Susan Pielmeier. Molly and Jack Phillips presented the awards, and were assisted in the presentation by Deanna Illes from the Palmerton School District who helped choose the recipients.

“I am honored to receive this award,” Solt said. Pielmeier echoed her words.

The awards are named after Dr. Lauretta Woodson, who taught at Eddystone School District in the 1950s and Temple University until she retired in 1984. She became very active in the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees. When she passed away, she bequeathed a sum of money to PASR to be used for the support of public education.

The purpose of the Lauretta Woodson Recognition Program is to honor one educator and one support professional for doing an outstanding job within a district or school. Chapters select the award recipients and then present them with a medallion, certificate, and PASR pin.

Also during the meeting new officers were installed by Cindy Sabol. They are: President, Molly Phillips; Vice President, Gloria Bowman; Secretary, Martha Cox; Treasurer, Bonnie Cortese; and Assistant Treasurers, Paul and Vicky Kocher.

Entertainment was provided by Mary Reynolds, who works at Fort Mifflin in Philadelphia and presented a talk entitled “Ordinary Men, Extraordinary Courage: Defending the Delaware.”

She brought a number of artifacts from Fort Mifflin to share with the group.
