Slatington marks 250th birthday
The Allen O. Delke American Legion Post 16 opened the ceremony for Slatington’s America 250 celebration.
Mayor Jeralyn Schoch welcomed residents and visitors, calling the event a milestone for both the country and the community.
“Welcome to the 250th celebration of our country,” Schoch said. “Today we stand together to mark an incredible milestone. Two hundred and fifty years ago, our nation began an experiment in liberty.”
Schoch noted that Slatington has played “its own vital role” in the American story and said the celebration reflects not only history, but the community’s present-day strength.
“This isn’t just a celebration of the past, it is a celebration of us — of who we are right now,” she said. “It is a moment to recognize that our strength comes from our unity, diversity, and commitment to one another.”
She emphasized that everyone in attendance is part of that legacy.
“Whether you have family who have lived here for generations or you just arrived, you are part of this 250-year story,” Schoch said.
Looking ahead, she encouraged the community to continue building on that foundation.
“As we look ahead, we have an opportunity to honor the past by making the next 250 years even better,” she said.
Schoch concluded by asking for a moment of silence in memory of Ron Scheffler, who she said was instrumental in coordinating portions of the day’s event and was a dedicated member of Allen O’Delke Post 16.
“He was currently serving as treasurer and was always willing to volunteer and share his extraordinary music abilities at events within our community,” Schoch said.
