Lehighton Lions carnival continues through Saturday

Children played games and enjoyed the thrill of the rides.

Elsewhere, the grown-ups chowed down on french fries and funnel cakes and relaxed while music echoed in the distance.

As the night wore on, two lucky youth were able to take their seats on the shiny set of new wheels they now sport.

It was all part of the second annual Lehighton Area Lioness Lions Club’s Spring Carnival, which got underway Thursday at the Lehighton grove.

Food, live bands, basket raffles, rides, games, bicycle raffle, vendors and live music from Jeni Hackett kicked off the three-day event.

Accompanied by his parents, Ricky Kirkendall and Sarah Stidham, Richard Kirkendall, 3, of Lehighton, was busy having fun on the Skyfighters ride.

“We live right up the street,” Stidham said. “It’s a way to support and have him (their son) have fun.”

Savanna Roberts took it all in as her children, Avery Moak, 11, and Kinsley Moak, 4, rode down the Rapid Slide.

“We came to the park and saw this,” Roberts said. “The kids love fairs.”

A top draw was the bicycle giveaway that was part of Children’s Day.

Alena Locke, 9, of Lehighton, and Cameron Krempasky, 18 months old, of Lehighton, had their names drawn.

“I feel like it’s cool,” said Alena as she gleefully examined the new bicycle she just won. “It’s my sister’s favorite color.”

Bob Silliman, event cochair, noted that the bicycles were sponsored by M & M Amusements and Dale’s Concessions.

Peggy Hittner, tailtwister, said opening night went well, but wished more of the youth would have come out on Children’s Day.

“We’re selling basket raffle pretty well,” Hittner said. “We have live music every night.”

Hittner said they’re grateful for the weather, and hopeful that it continues to cooperate.

“We appreciate the sun,” she said. “We’re hoping every day is good for us.”

The carnival continues today from 5 to 9 p.m. and will include live music from Good Friday.

It’s also open from 2 to 9 p.m. Saturday, and will see live music from The Buzz. The drawing for the basket raffle will also take place on Saturday, though the winner need not be present.
