Lansford discusses grants
Lansford Borough Council on Tuesday discussed Community Development Block Grant funding, as the applications are due next week.
Council President Joe Genits suggested using the funding for street improvements to Dock Street from Route 209 to the No. 9 Mine.
Genits asked Councilman Bruce Markovich if the project would qualify, as he was familiar with the CDBG requirements as a former council president who wrote the grants.
Markovich said that he thought the borough was committed to paving West Ridge Street, a multiyear project using the funding, which is about $87,000 a year.
The borough worked on getting surveys from residents last year to ensure the West Ridge Street improvements qualified under the program.
Markovich pointed out that the project was estimated at more than $300,000, and this round of CDBG funding should be moved to the West Ridge Street project.
Genits asked for Markovich’s assistance with the grant, and Markovich said they need the costs from the engineer for the project, which will need additional items such as handicapped ramps.
Genits asked if that was included in the original project, and Markovich said no. Council did move funds from another CDBG project to Ridge Street, Markovich said, but wasn’t sure if any other funds had been moved to the project.
The borough needs the costs from the engineer, because the program requires an explanation of how the requested funds will be spent, Markovich said.
