Fire damages Lansford duplex, 1 displaced

Firefighters from two counties responded to a multiple alarm blaze on East Front Street in Lansford Thursday afternoon.

Firefighters encountered flames leaping from the roof and back of 426 E. Front St. when they arrived just before 1 p.m., Fire Chief Joe Greco of American Fire Co. No. 1 of Lansford said.

Both sides of the structure sustained damage, and both were homes, 426 and 424 E. Front St., were undergoing renovations at the time, he said.

Only one side of the structure was occupied, Greco said, leaving one person displaced. Neither side of the home is livable at this time, he said.

A state police fire marshal was called to investigate the origin and cause, and Greco suspects a wood-burning stove or heating unit may have been to blame for the fire.

Firefighters had no issues with water or accessibility, and no injuries were reported, he said. Greco heard there was an incident involving a fire police officer, but did not have details.

Mayor Denise Leibensperger said that police responded to an incident where a vehicle was struck and an investigation was ongoing and charges pending.

The fire went to a second alarm due to the time of day and need for manpower, Greco said.

Responding to the fire were these fire companies: Lansford, Summit Hill, Coaldale, Nesquehoning, Jim Thorpe, the American Hose and South Ward of Tamaqua and Tuscarora. Lehighton Ambulance was also on scene.
