Carbon eyes changes to save on job listings
Carbon County hopes to save thousands by switching how they advertise for open positions, Commissioner Michael Sofranko said Thursday.
The county had been using the online job site, Indeed, to advertise for available jobs, but listings above three are paid, he said.
“Indeed changed,” Sofranko said. “Now you can only post three free jobs per month.”
Each paid listing now would cost between $300 and $500 per week, which would end up costing the county between $30,000 and $45,000, he said.
“The three county commissioners sitting here felt that is not financially wise to do,” Sofranko said. “We decided to sit down and come up with a new marketing technique.”
The county plans to use its own website and Facebook page to list jobs, as well as advertise in local newspapers and circulars, he said.
Human resources personnel will also be going to high schools and other events, such as job fairs, to speak about jobs the county has to offer, Sofranko said.
“We’re not sitting here spending money,” Sofranko said. “We are exploring new ways to reach out to get the best bang for your dollar to make sure we give back to local newspapers when we advertise there.”
The county remains under a hiring freeze, and no new positions are available, he said.
“We’re trying to fill positions that are open or vacant that are already budgeted,” Sofranko said. “You’re not getting a tax increase because we’re hiring new people.”
Many of the positions are entry level positions, which recent high school or college graduates may be interested in, he said.
The county also hopes to attract more people who live in the county for the positions, Sofranko said, adding that’s the number one reason for advertising locally.
“We want to try to get county residents here,” he said during his commissioner’s report. “We want to make sure that offer is out there.”
