Tamaqua man charged, others cited in alcohol investigation

Tamaqua police charged Anthony Stalgaitis, 21, of Tamaqua, with selling/furnishing liquor to a minor and public drunkenness on May 5.

Also that day, police charged others including minors and adults exhibiting signs of alcohol consumption.

According to police, officers were sent to the Fine Wine and Spirits store in Tamaqua to speak to an employee about a man who was buying large quantities of alcohol and selling it to minors.

The employee told police he heard from a woman about the man, later identified as Stalgaitis, whom she believed was purchasing liquor then giving it to minors in a nearby park.

Police spoke to the woman, who said that she often sees small Fireball bottles around picnic tables near the basketball court. She said she saw the man buy multiple small bottles of the liquor and take it to the park for the youths.

Police then spotted Stalgaitis on Cedar Street. At that time, Stalgaitis was stumbling and had an odor of alcohol on his breath, police said. He was taken into custody and police subsequently learned that he had purchased 20 small bottles of Fireball earlier in day.

Moments later, police saw a young man stumbling and unable to keep his balance. Police said he admitted to drinking and told officers that he gave Stalgaitis money to buy him a bottle of liquor.

Police said several others were taken into custody or cited after the investigation, including Robert Fredericks, 21, disorderly conduct; Anthony Valentine, 26, disorderly conduct; James Nalesnik, public drunkenness and underage drinking; and Gage Smolick, public drunkenness.
