Local Roundup: Results from April 27
Palmerton’s baseball and softball teams both posted Colonial League wins over Jim Thorpe on Monday.
The win by the baseball squad clinched a district playoff berth.
BASEBALL
Palmerton-Jim Thorpe
Cameron Pengelly tossed a four-hit shutout to lead Palmerton to a 4-0 Colonial League victory over Jim Thorpe.
Pengelly struck out nine and walked one for the Blue Bombers, who have won four of their last six games and clinched a district playoff berth. He also helped himself offensively with a single and a double.
Greyson Ahner accounted for two of Palmerton’s runs, leading off the second inning with a solo home run before adding an RBI single in the seventh.
Luke Matsko gave the Bombers an early lead with a sacrifice fly in the first that scored Jason Carelli, while pinch-runner Tegan Silfies came home on a wild pitch in the fourth.
Tyler Hoherchak had a single and double for the Olympians, who dropped their second game to Palmerton in four days.

SOFTBALL
Palmerton-Jim Thorpe
Jaylin Strohl went 4-for-5 with six RBIs to power Palmerton to a 14-1 Colonial League victory over Jim Thorpe.
Strohl started her big day with an RBI double in the first inning, added a two-run double in the third, and delivered another RBI double in the fifth. She capped her afternoon with a two-run single in the seventh.
Mackenzie Ferber also had three hits for the Blue Bombers, finishing with two doubles, a single, one RBI and a run scored.
Grace Schneider supplied more offense with two extra-base hits and four RBIs, highlighted by a two-run homer during Palmerton’s five-run fifth inning. She also tripled.
Kylie Sullivan had two of Jim Thorpe’s three hits, collecting a single and double while scoring the Olympians’ only run.

Northwestern-Lehighton
Northwestern continued its strong Colonial League season with a 14-3 victory over Lehighton.
Emma Freeman led the Tigers offense, going 2-for-4 with two singles, two runs and two RBIs.
Ainsley Behler also had two hits, one run and two RBIs.
Lizzie Diehl earned the win in the circle, striking out nine and walking three over five innings. She allowed one earned run and carried a no-hitter into the fifth.
Dakota Markley broke up the no-hit bid with a two-out single to right field in the fifth for Lehighton’s lone hit.

Williams Valley edged visiting Northern Lehigh 2-0 in a non-league pitchers’ duel.
Addison Smith turned in a strong effort in the circle for the Bulldogs, striking out four and walking none while allowing two earned runs on six hits over six innings.
The deciding blow came in the fifth inning, when Kamri Koppenhaver delivered a two-run single for the Vikings.
Koppenhaver also earned the shutout win, striking out four, walking three and allowing four hits.
Kenzie Chruscical had two singles for Northern Lehigh, while Tegan Simms and Savannah Kast each added a hit.

Pleasant Valley-Wilson
Pleasant Valley used an eight-run seventh inning to pull away for a 13-10 non-conference victory over Wilson.
The Bears broke open a back-and-forth game that featured six lead changes by sending 12 batters to the plate in the sixth inning. Two-run singles by Lila Borger and Emma George, along with RBI singles from Bella Altemose and Rylan Knapp, highlighted the decisive rally.
Knapp paced Pleasant Valley’s offense with three hits, including two singles and a double, while scoring twice and driving in a run.
Borger finished with four RBIs on a pair of two-run singles, coming in the third and sixth innings.

Weatherly erupted for 11 runs in the first inning and rolled to a 16-0 non-league victory over Lincoln Leadership Academy.
Rebecca Caldwell led the Wreckers with two triples, three runs scored and two RBIs.
Olivia Marasco also contributed a triple, two runs scored and three RBIs.
With plenty of early support, Abby Binder dominated in the circle. She struck out eight, walked one and did not allow a hit over three innings to earn the win.
Abby Weston and Madison Makowiec each scored three runs for Weatherly.
