Local Roundup: Results from April 21

Northern Lehigh, Marian and Palmerton all posted wins in both baseball and softball on Tuesday.

Northwestern also picked up a pair of wins, one in softball and another in girls lacrosse.

BASEBALL

Catasauqua- N. Lehigh

Parker Schaffer and Avery Kabrick combined to throw a three-hitter to lead Northern Lehigh to an 11-0 shutout over Catasauqua in a Colonial League tilt.

Schaffer allowed three hits and struck out seven over six innings, and Kabrick pitched a hitless seventh.

Jayden Christman drove in three runs, and Brayden Buskirk and Landen Cougle each had two hits and two RBIs for the Bulldogs. Chris Vargas added two hits and an RBI.

Vargas swiped two of Northern Lehigh’s six stolen bases. The Bulldogs also drew seven walks.

Weatherly-Marian

Jason Ashfield knocked in three runs, and Noah Bauder tossed a four-inning, no-hitter as Marian rolled to a 15-0 Schuylkill League blanking of Weatherly.

Ashfield had two hits, and Jonathan Derr and Cole Jordan each knocked in two runs. Jordan and Noah McGinley each scored three runs, and Cole Defrancisco and Jimmy Cannon each crossed the plate twice.

Bauder struck out nine for the Colts, who won their fourth straight. Marian also stole five bases.

The victory officially clinched a district playoff berth for the Colts, and kept them tied atop the league’s Division 2 standings.

Palmerton-Palisades

Palmerton stormed out to a commanding lead, and the Blue Bombers held off a late Palisades rally in a 10-9 Colonial League victory.

Brady Reph stroked a two-run single as part of a four-run Palmerton first inning. Luke Matsko and Cameron Pengelly each had a two-run single in their five-run sixth inning that staked them to 10-2 advantage.

Palisades responded with a seven-run sixth inning to close the gap.

Matsko and Grayson each registered two hits for Palmerton.

Tamaqua-Pine Grove

Tamaqua staked itself to an early lead, and the Blue Raiders held off a Pine Grove comeback for a 5-4 Schuylkill League victory.

Down 5-1, the Cardinals pieced together a three-run sixth inning, but ultimately fell short to lose their third straight.

Jake Yenser went 6 2/3 innings, allowing four runs and three hits with seven strikeouts and two walks for Tamaqua. Landon Kamant recorded the final out for the Blue Raiders.

Yenser, Kamant, and Gavin Shannon each had an RBI, while Quinn Coleman went 2-for-3.

Tamaqua was busy on the basepaths, recording seven steals. Yenser and Shannon each netted two steals.

Lehighton-Saucon Valley

Mason Brown and Colin Madison twirled a combined two-hitter to help Saucon Valley slip past Colonial League foe Lehighton, 3-0.

Brown allowed one hit over the first five innings, struck out three and walked three, while Madison surrendered the other hit, striking out two and walking two for Saucon Valley, which won its eighth straight.

Luke Haydt allowed two hits and three runs with three strikeouts and two walks over five innings for Lehighton. Cole Dietz pitched a hitless final inning.

Saucon Valley’s Noah Hubert snapped a scoreless tie in the fourth when he hit a solo homer.

Chase Llewellyn and Brock Atwood each had a hit for Lehighton, which dropped its fifth straight.

Tri-Valley opened up a close game with a three-run third, and the Bulldogs went on to an 8-1 Schuylkill League victory over Panther Valley.

Peyton Schley had two hits and two RBIs, and Jack Wehry added two hits for Tri-Valley.

Danny Wehr went 2-for-3, and Derek Lazar went 1-for-3 with an RBI for Panther Valley, which committed five errors.

SOFTBALL

Northwestern-Jim Thorpe

Northwestern stretched its winning streak to seven as the Tigers rolled to a 17-0 Colonial League victory over Jim Thorpe.

The winners put the game away by scoring 13 times in the second inning. In the frame, Northwestern collected nine hits, including doubles from both Ainsley Behler and Emma Freeman, and a grand slam to center off the bat of Abby Dunstan.

Emily Bressi (three hits, three runs) and Behler (three hits, one a double, two runs) both had big days at the plate.

Freeman also finished with two hits, two runs and three RBIs.

Ryah Confer accounted for the Olympians’ only hit.

Saucon Valley evened its record in the Colonial League with a 10-0 win over Lehighton.

Ryan Gall paced the Panthers with two hits, two runs and four RBIs, while Kaylie Scorce added two hits and three runs.

Peyton Hausman accounted for the Indians’ only hit off Saucon hurler Matty Seyfrield.

Seyfriend earned the win, as she finished with 12 strikeouts and no walks.

Weatherly-Marian

A 15-run fourth inning allowed Marian to register a 16-1 Schuylkill League victory over visiting Weatherly.

Gracie Sendatch finished 3-for-4 for the Fillies, including a two-run double and an RBI single.

Kayla Birrer had two hits in the big fourth inning, connecting for a pair of RBI singles. Ciari Wolfgang and Amelia Degler both added RBI singles in the fourth, with Degler’s ending the game.

Rebecca Caldwell had the only hits for the Wreckers — a solo homer in the fourth.

Birrer earned the win, striking out six.

Northern Lehigh plated 11 runs the first inning and kept on scoring to claim a 24-6 Colonial League win over Catasauqua.

Annalisa Douglas sparked the Bulldog offense with six RBIs on three hits, which included a pair of two-run singles in the opening frame. She also connected for a three-run homer in the fifth.

Tegan Simms – who also had three hits – added a two-run double in the first.

Brynlie Remaley drilled a two-run triple in the fourth, while Kylee Snyder (two hits), Fiona Jones (three), Addison Smith (four), Audriana Wertman (three), Jaycie Longebach (three) and Leah Wentz (two) all contributed multiple hits for the winners.

In a Colonial League slugfest, Palmerton outlasted Palisades to capture a 13-11 comeback victory.

Trailing 6-1 after three innings, the Bombers’ Grace Schneider cut the deficit in half with a two-run homer to center. In the next inning, Kyla Trumbore pulled the Bombers closer with another two-run homer.

Olivia Kalman knotted the game in the sixth with a two-run single, while Jaylin Strohl delivered a three-run double and Schneider added an RBI single to put Palmerton in front.

Samantha Wolfe finished with two doubles, a run and an RBI for the Bombers.

Chelcy Clark pitched a three-inning perfect game, striking out seven and getting two ground outs.

Clark received plenty of offensive support as Callee Leffler hit a first-inning grand slam. She also added a double, and finished with three runs and five RBIs.

Rylan Knapp’s four-hit day wasn’t enough for Pleasant Valley, as Southern Lehigh earned a 13-5 non-league win.

Knapp collected three singles, one producing two runs, and also added a two-run double.

PV’s Lila Borger finished with two hits and a run.

Rylan Messinger paced the Spartans with two singles, a double, three runs and an RBI, while Demi Lewis collected two singles, a double and two RBIs.

Northwestern-Freedom

Cali Colistra’s goal in overtime lifted Northwestern to a 9-8 non-league victory over Freedom.

Colistra and Madelyn Lagowy both finished with three goals for the Tigers, while Olivia Fagan added two. Ella Collins chipped in with a goal and three assists.

The Patriots’ Sage Carter led all scorers with five goals.
