Tamaqua Invite: JT boys, NW girls win team titles
The Jim Thorpe boys and the Northwestern girls each captured team titles at the annual Tamaqua Invitational on Saturday.
Both Lehighton squads earned runner-up finishes during the 14-team competition.
The Olympian boys — who finished with 126 points to better the Indians 114.5 — gained firsts in three events. Kayden Spence led Thorpe by winning the 400, while the 400 and 1600 relay teams also posted victories.
Lehighton’s Bodie Hawk was a double winner, posting top throws in both the shot put and discus. Teammate Elijah Pagotto added a first in the 3200.
Northwestern, which placed fifth in the team standings, also collected three firsts at the Invite. Logan Mesics out-jumped the field in the triple jump, while Ethan Kaschak captured the pole vault event. The Tigers also registered a first in the 3200 relay.
In the girls competition, the Tigers narrowly edged Lehighton and Palmerton for the team title. Northwestern ended with 117, compared to the Indians’ 114 and the Bombers’ 112.
Natalie Nestor crossed first in the 800 for the Tigers, and Mallory Conner ended on top in the discus. Northwestern’s 3200 relay team also added a winning performance.
The Indians collected four firsts, with Lilyana Shapiro collecting two of them. Shapiro sprinted to wins in the 200 and 400. Fellow Lehighton sprinter Taylor Moyer captured the 100 by .01. In addition to those wins, the Tribe also received a first from the 1600 relay squad.
Palmerton was paced by Emma Rex (javelin) and Rylee Roman (pole vault), who won their events. The Bombers’ 400 relay team also turned in a first-place performance.
Other area winners in the girls competition included Jim Thorpe’s Stacy Bos (1600) and Logan Gillespie (3200), and Tamaqua’s Katelynn Fredericks (300 hurdles).
