Towamensing schoolhouse renovations continue

Renovations continue on the Greenzweig one-room schoolhouse in Towamensing Township.

The township Historic Commission is sponsoring a tricky tray on April 25 to be held at the Towamensing Township Fire Company, 105 Firehouse Road, Palmerton.

The event starts at 9 a.m. Drawing for prizes will be held at 2 p.m., with pick up the same day at 5 p.m.

All proceeds will go toward renovations of the schoolhouse.

Through the support of the commission and volunteers, renovations have continued on the building. They are working on placing an ADA railing around the wheelchair accessible cement ramp, which was built last year as outside renovations were underway.

Numerous residents donated their time and materials to put up new siding, replace or repair windows and paint the exterior. Resident Kate Yost will begin painting the inside of the school in May.

A new entrance door has been purchased as the original door could not be salvaged.

The schoolhouse was used from 1892 to 1955. The property was donated to Towamensing Township by the Kuehner family in 2014. In 1892 the cost to build and provide desks, as well as securing the deed, was a total of $767.24. In 1896 the school term was only six months and teachers were paid $25 to $28 monthly.

In 1914 water fountains were purchased and each student had to provide his or her own cup. Prior to that “a pail and two dippers were used by the whole school.”

It is uncertain exactly what the schoolhouse will be used for as it has no electric, heat or restrooms at this point. Possibilities include housing old-time farm implements/antiques, a veterans memorial or to use the schoolhouse as a meeting place.

An opportunity to see the renovations will be at an open house held at the school on July 25 in honor of the 250th birthday of America.

To get to the schoolhouse from Route 209 take Church Road, pass Beltzville Beverage, continue between two churches and then the schoolhouse is 1 mile on the left after the stop sign.
