Letter to the editor: Nesquehoning data center

Dear Editor,

The proposed data center being planned next to residential properties is irresponsible by the local planning commission. The controversy and public outcry should warrant their caution. I have worked in the electrical generation business at various Power plants over 30 plus years and was certified by PJM.

I attended several meetings during their presentation by the Foreign French ownership. All the questions I asked were met with the questions being unanswered or lies.

Last Summer of 2025 and 2024 the grid was overloaded with usage records being set. When this happens PJM shuts manufacturing companies across the state down, to prevent a system overload and a potential Blackout. This happened several times the last few Summers and Winters.

My last position was at an emergency Black start plant for system support and I witnessed all these emergencies.

I asked the data center manager where they planned on getting over 300 continuous MW for their plant. He said PJM assured them, that they had the available power.

I asked him if his company was ever sued and he said NO. Fact is they own Bitcoin and they are currently being sued and should be out of business in the near future. Since that meeting, they changed their company name again.

All the other places that have these data centers like data highway in Virginia have seen the nightmares these facilities bring. Property in that area goes for over 7 million an acre which raised everyone’s property values tripling all their tax’s. They have to listen to the loud noise from the cooling fans and backup generators at all hours of the day. Their water rates have tripled due to high water usage by data centers.

Sewer rates tripled and some of these plants want to discharge their water into local waterways. People living there are devastated because of the high property values and costs they can’t even sell their homes, because No one would be stupid enough to want to live by a data center.

Nesquehoning and Panther Valley want to bring this to our neighborhood and ruin our quality of life. These plants, with the noise and other problems have a negative effect on local’s health and should face legal litigation. It will be funny to see how many people get employed there that were on the planning commission or their family members. When Panther Creek Power plant was voted through a lot of town councilman got positions there and family members.
