Carbon County Court - Guilty pleas

Carbon County Court Judge Joseph J. Matika has accepted guilty pleas and handed down rulings in six criminal cases.

Alyssa M. McCarroll, 38, of Jim Thorpe, was charged by Kidder Township Police Officer Allen B. Stroll with an accident involving damage to an attended vehicle or property on Oct. 29, 2025.

She pleaded guilty and Matika sentenced her to serve three months on probation, perform 15 hours of community service and pay a $100 LiveScan fee.

Crystal L. Biles, 46, of Weatherly, was charged by Weatherly Borough Police Officer Michael A. Eyer with retail theft, receiving stolen property and disorderly conduct on Sept. 18, 2024.

She pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct; the remaining charges were dropped.

Matika gave her no further penalty other than to fine her $150 and order her to pay a $75/$100 LiveScan fee.

Christina M. Smith, 43, of Lehighton, was charged by Lehighton State Trooper Salvador L. Melo with criminal mischief and criminal trespass on Nov. 10, 2024.

She pleaded guilty to mischief, and Matika ordered her to pay $2,436.73 restitution to the victim, serve two years on probation and pay a $50 monthly supervision fee and perform 100 hours of community service. He also ordered Smith to have no further contact with the victim.

Richard Ortiz Jr., 35, of Hazleton, was charged by Weatherly Borough Police Officer Charles J. McFeeley Jr. with possession of marijuana; possession of drug paraphernalia; driving without a license; driving with a suspended or revoked license; improper sunscreening; no rear lights and restrictions on alcoholic beverages on April 28, 2020.

He pleaded guilty to the sunscreening and light charges. The remaining charges were dismissed.

Matika fined Ortiz $100 on the improper sunscreening charge, and ordered him to pay a $100 LiveScan fee. He imposed a $25 fine on the lighting charge.

Brayan B. Tirado, 25, of New Castle, Delaware, was charged by Lehighton State Trooper Nicholas D. Ferra with possession of a small amount of marijuana; possession of drug paraphernalia and disorderly conduct on Sept. 1, 2025.

He pleaded guilty to the conduct charge; the remaining charges were dropped.

Matika fined Tirado $150.

Junaid Ahmad Khan, 28, of Dover, Delaware, was charged by Fern Ridge State Trooper Jonathan M. Lazarchick with recklessly endangering another person; driving under the influence of a controlled substance, impaired ability, first offense; failure to carry a license; driving while his license was suspended or revoked; disregarding traffic lanes; driving in the right lane; improper signaling; speeding at 23 mph over the limit; careless driving and reckless driving on May 13, 2021, in Kidder Township.

He pleaded guilty to reckless endangerment. Matika sentenced him to six to 18 months in the Carbon County Correctional Facility; pay a $100 LiveScan fee and perform 50 hours of community service.
